Diamond D demolished 314 single and multi-family housing units at Travis AFB through the US Navy Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) office at Travis AFB. Diamond D planned and performed or oversaw pre-demolition activities that included securing the project area with fencing, removing and recycling appliances, surveying to identify hazardous asbestos containing materials (ACM) and lead-based paint (LBP), ACM and LBP abatement activities, permitting, and cutting and capping of utilities prior to commencing demolition activities.
After Diamond D completed the demolition phase we removed all of the debris, graded the sites and hydro-seeded them. Diamond D used a heavy duty shredder to process and break down demolition debris from the multi-family units into small pieces and reduced the volume of the debris to about one-quarter of what it would have been with conventional equipment. The process also removed all of the metals from the debris waste stream, which were recovered for recycling. The processed debris conserved landfill space by utilizing only 25 percent of the space that it would have otherwise. The small pieces of debris will also decompose much more rapidly in the landfill than larger chunks would. An added benefit was the reduction in the number of trucks entering Travis AFB and traveling on its streets to haul the debris to the landfill by seventy-five percent, significantly improving public safety and reducing air quality emissions. Diamond D’s philanthropy for donating used appliances to the Salvation Army that were turned over to us at contract award was also recognized by ROICC Travis.
